Compassionate Connections

Many children with disability and their families living in low resource settings in South Asia experience extreme suffering - physically, socially, emotionally and spiritually. Access to the required healthcare is unachievable. By delivering a world class early identification and early intervention service in their communities, we will support families as they discover the uniqueness of their child and teach them specific ways of supporting their child’s development. Coming alongside families and delivering compassionate healthcare will foster hope for their future.
Cerebral Palsy Support Initiative
Cerebral Palsy is among the most common childhood disabilities. In rural South Asia, it is estimated that one in every 300 children are born with Cerebral Palsy (compared to one in every 700 children in Australia). Additionally the diagnosis is substantially delayed, with a mean age of over five years, compared with the possibility of a diagnosis  as early as three months.
Barriers to early intervention for children with Cerebral Palsy include:
  • diagnosis delayed beyond the critical window of neuroplasticity
  • poor or no access to evidence-based early intervention
  • inadequate state funded support and initiatives
  • inability to afford services
  • prevailing misconceptions, stigma, and social exclusion
As a result of this initiative, families in the selected geographical area will be able to have their children who are at risk of having a disability or delayed development assessed according to international clinical guidelines without incurring burdensome health expenditure. Those in need will be provided with options to support the development of their child to minimise the negative impacts of disability.
